1000 Jobs/Haiti Thermometer

We came into existence for the sole purpose of facilitating the creation of fair and decent jobs in Haiti. This is our passion, and will remain the force that drives us! To reach our goal of creating an initial 1,000 jobs in the Central Plateau of Haiti, we seek ideas that can be transformed into sustainable businesses and companies, and form partnerships with small and medium enterprises that share our vision. Below are three cooperatives of women that are part of currently operating in Haiti

Co-op Feminine of HincheThis women’s cooperative is located in the center of Hinche where it has operated for many years. The co-founder of 1000 Jobs, Buck Close, had seen their principal products – embroidered textiles and greeting cards – for many years as he had received them as gifts from the Salesian Sisters of Haiti. He contacted the Co-op and began marketing their products early in 2009. There are currently around 35 women working at the Co-op – up from 15 earlier in the year. The experienced workers are able to earn US$5 (60 % over current Haitian minimum wage) or more per day and there are three women and one man who serve as supervisors/managers. 1000 Jobs supplies yarn and fabric as well as new designs and marketing input. We purchase a month’s production in advance to enable the Co-op to manage their cash flow.

Co-op Feminine ThorlandLocated in the Carrefour area of Port au Prince this group was formed by 1000 Jobs in coordination with the Salesian Sisters of Haiti who provide a work place and payroll services. There are presently 12 workers in the Co-op who are producing table linen sets of various sizes. These sets are all hand embroidered and highly detailed. Like the other cooperatives, the Co-op Feminine Thorland provides a wage of $US5 (60% over current Haitian minimum wage) per day for an experienced worker who works a full time 5 day per week job. 1000 Jobs purchases all production as well as providing design assistance and make to order commissions. Yarn and fabric are also provided.

Co-op Feminine Cite SoleilLocated in the most notorious slum in Haiti, this Coop of 13 women began producing for 1000 Jobs in mid 2009. Like its sister Coop in Thorland, this group was formed with the help of the Salesian Sisters of Haiti who provide the work place and financial management. 1000 Jobs provides the orders, pays for them one month in advance and provides raw materials such as yarn and fabric. The articles produced are similar in nature to those produced by the Co-op in Thorland.

Knitting Co-op of MirebalaisThis group, organized with the assistance of Fonkoze, was formed to train and eventually employ knitters for various product lines such as caps for new born babies and market bags. It began in the summer of 2009 and is managed by Lucy Close with the assistance of the staff of Fonkoze in Mirebalais and the generous efforts of volunteers. There are 12 women involved and they meet for three-day training sessions monthly. 1000 Jobs provides raw material and pays the members as they train.

1000 Jobs/Haiti – Samasource Digital Workforce (Mirebalais) - Jobs creation has never been more relevant in Haiti than at this very moment of recovery from natural disaster. 1000 Jobs/Haiti, Inc., through a partnership with Samasource brings relief efforts in the form of decent and sustainable jobs for people affected by the earthquake of January 12, 2010.

More than 50 people were trained to produce digital work in Mirebalais in the Central Plateau Region where Haiti counts most of its Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). This type of jobs represents a life-changing situation for most of the workers; also, this is the first time such work has been introduced in Haiti, which shows an improvement of the competitiveness of the country. Now instead of thinking about moving to the Dominican Republic or going back to Port-au-Prince, this group has the major alternative of working decently while earning more than the minimum wage of US$ 5 a day, which is an important contribution to the development of Haiti. 1000 Jobs/Haiti, Inc. is consolidating this initiative by working with its partners to find more contracts. This will eventually increase the number of workers and keep the original ones working for a longer period. The workers, 34 now, are women, youth, and IDPs; some of them lost all of their belongings after the earthquake. This initiative might create up to 50 jobs for now, however it impacts an important number of people in Haiti particularly in Mirebalais.
